Conversation with Mélanie, Wedding Designer: An Immersive Journey into Floral Art and Wedding Scenography

We both know it, Mélanie – decor plays one of the most impactful roles in a wedding. And who better than you to talk about it? We’ve collaborated on several weddings, and each time, your work brings that touch of emotion and elegance that transforms a venue. Today, I want to share your perspective as a wedding designer with our readers.

Your Role as a Wedding Designer

Mélanie, we often hear about “wedding design” without fully understanding what it entails. Since you’re passionate about your work, how would you describe your role?

Mélanie: Many people think my job is just about flowers, but in reality, it’s a holistic approach. My role is to tell a story through the entire wedding scenography. Each couple has their own universe, and I translate that through floral compositions, of course, but also elements like wedding day stationery, color harmonies, vase selections, candleholders, table settings, and even the layout of the spaces. Everything must be designed as an immersive experience.

Trends and Inspirations: A Wedding Designer’s Perspective

You know me – I love discovering new trends and ensuring my couples benefit from the latest ideas. So, tell me, what’s trending right now in wedding design?

Mélanie: In recent years, we’ve seen a strong return to natural compositions – wild bouquets, asymmetrical arrangements, and a mix of different textures. But beyond flowers, staging plays a crucial role. We’re seeing a lot of minimalist yet sophisticated tablescapes with noble materials like crinkled linen, handcrafted ceramic plates, and touches of gold or copper for an elegant finish. Candles and candleholders are also essential to create a warm, intimate atmosphere. And stationery has become a central design element, with delicate calligraphy and textured materials like cotton paper or vellum.

And you, you have a style all your own…

Mélanie’s Advice for a Successful Wedding Scenography

Alright, now help out our future couples – what are your key tips for achieving a cohesive wedding design?

Mélanie: First, I’d tell them to trust us, the wedding designers! More seriously, they should have an overall vision but also be open to guidance. A centerpiece or floral arch isn’t chosen at random – everything must harmonize. I always advise them to start with a defined color palette and apply it across all elements: flowers, textiles, stationery, even the smallest details like candles or ribbon-wrapped napkins.

And let’s not underestimate the power of lighting. We’ve talked about this before – lighting completely transforms a space. Hanging string lights, dozens of candles… that’s what creates a truly magical atmosphere.

The Challenges of Being a Wedding Designer

Let’s be honest, Mélanie – we both know the challenges of the event industry. What are the biggest difficulties you face in your job?

Mélanie: Oh, where do I start?  First, logistics. Every element must be planned ahead, ordered on time, and perfectly coordinated for the big day. Even the smallest mistake can disrupt the entire design. For example, if a vase delivery is late or the candleholders aren’t the right height, we must find quick solutions.

And then, there’s the unexpected: we’ve had sudden rain showers forcing us to rethink an entire outdoor setup… or a bride changing her color scheme at the last minute! But that’s also what makes our job exciting.

So true… but it’s also what makes our work beautiful!

Mélanie: Exactly! Finding solutions, adapting, and, most importantly, seeing the couple’s eyes light up when they discover their wedding design… that’s priceless!

Why Hiring a Wedding Designer Makes All the Difference

I already know the answer, but for those who are still hesitant – why is it essential to hire a wedding designer like you?

Mélanie: Because a wedding isn’t just a collection of pretty decorative elements – it’s a complete vision. There needs to be harmony in the entire scenography, a fluidity between the flowers, stationery, furniture, tableware, textiles… A wedding designer understands this alchemy and knows how to create an atmosphere that makes sense.

And when we work well together, like we do at Carpe Diem Weddings, everything flows seamlessly!

Mélanie: Absolutely! The harmony between the wedding planner and the wedding designer is essential for everything to run smoothly. You coordinate the couple’s expectations and the overall logistics, and I translate that vision into aesthetics and ambiance. That’s how we create a wedding that’s not just a beautiful event, but a true experience.

The Art of Wedding Design: Creating Emotion

To wrap things up, if you had to define your job in one sentence, what would it be?

Mélanie: Wedding design is more than just decoration – it’s a way to create emotion and immerse guests in a thoughtfully curated universe.

Thank you, Mélanie, for this wonderful conversation! Our couples are lucky to have you by their side to bring their vision to life. Can’t wait to create more stunning weddings together!
